Forensic Nurses in Disasters

Community disaster plans must integrate health care providers as primary resources to render immediate care to victims injured during the event. The role of the forensic nurse is diverse and demonstrates the following clinical capabilities: trauma and emergency nursing, mental health and critical incident stress management, death investigation, infectious disease, syndromic surveillance and public health nursing. Each aspect poses many challenges.  Many forensic nurses also join Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Teams (DMORTs).

The Disaster Planning Task Force developed these resources to assist in the preparation of all communities that provide forensic services.
