Advocacy Day 2019

“Advocacy Day is about connection- whether it’s speaking to your legislators, meeting other IAFN members, or catching up with old friends. It’s a great opportunity to be able to unite and connect for a common cause.”

- Erin Pollitt , 2019 Advocacy Day attendee

Advocacy Day 2019 began with a training on communication, leadership and current policy issues related to Forensic Nursing. We were joined by IAFN’s Public Policy representative, Patrick Cooney and Ingrida Lusis, Vice President Policy and Government Affairs for the American Nurses Association who provided information on the Survivors' Access to Supportive Care Act (SASCA), the re-authorization of the violence Against Women Act (VAWA), and providing funding to address the needs of the nursing community to assist assault survivors. You can read more about these in IAFN's Current Issue Briefs.

In the afternoon, members partnered up to visit their legislators or joined another member between appointments. In this way, members were able to learn from one another, build relationships, and learn about the political landscape and priorities of various states. At the end of the day, we came together for a debriefing where members shared their experience and feedback from various meetings. It was heartening to hear so much support for forensic nurses! Our members were pleased to see many staffers and legislators really understood forensic nursing and access to care. Other staffers and legislators had a lot of questions and sought to educate themselves. Many members had the opportunity to discuss local issues and realities. In one case, a legislator even left a meeting to say hello to our nurses.

Coming to IAFN events is always about more than is on the agenda. We hope that the next IAFN event you attend provides you with similar inspiration from networking with and learning from and about your peers! Start planning now for Advocacy Day 2020!  We hope to have over 100 members join us on the Hill.

If you couldn't attend and want to participate, we encourage you to set a meeting with your representatives locally and share the issue briefs. Reach out to IAFN and the Government Affairs Committee can support you in your efforts.  Thanks for your support in advancing policy that supports the work we do with our patients.
