Abortion laws limit healthcare options for victims of Sexual Violence

The International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) calls for safeguards to accessible reproductive care options for patients following sexual violence. 


Laws recently passed in many states have partially or completely blocked access to care for survivors of sexual assault who seek an abortion. These laws have either severely restricted the time period for obtaining an abortion or—as in the case of the new law in Alabama—completely deny abortion care to victims of rape and incest. In reality, many women do not even realize they are pregnant within the six weeks immediately following a rape. This new legislation would impede the forensic nurse’s ability to provide the full range of safe and effective reproductive options to a vulnerable patient population.   Read more.
