This course is part of a grant-funded program at Duquesne University to provide advanced nurse education to increase the number of Registered Nurses (RNs), Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) and Forensic Nurses (FNs) who are trained and certified as sexual assault nurse examiners (SANEs) in communities on a local, regional and/or state level, focusing on increasing service to rural and medically underserved areas (MUAs). As a recipient of this grant, Duquesne University School of Nursing is able to offer scholarship opportunities to nurses interested in pursuing IAFN SANE certification. This course, taught by experts in the areas of forensic nursing, law enforcement and criminal prosecution, emphasizes victim advocacy and the overall importance of being a member of the interdisciplinary Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) in the investigative, health care and prosecution processes. This course serves as the "classroom" portion of the national certification offered through IAFN (International Association of Forensic Nurses). You will learn the theory, research base, and legal rationales for protocols used by SANEs. You will observe simulated forensic interviews, evidence collection and expert witness testimony. All training is consistent with the standards of practice as defined by the IAFN. Upon completion of the Online Didactic Course, nurses enrolled into this grant program will then enroll in the 2-day in-person Clinical Preceptor Course. The grant covers all fees associated with travel for this course which will be held in Pittsburgh, PA and is offered several times a year. Upon completion of the Clinical Preceptor Course, nurses are entered into a mentorship program in which they have access to expert SANE case review, education, and supervision during the remainder of 300 SANE-related clinical hours they serve at their practicing institute or hospital via secure videoconferencing. A 3 week review course will follow to help prepare nurses to take the certification exam.
