This course examines injuries caused by vehicular trauma, stabbing/cutting wounds, firearms, "non-lethal" weapons such as a Stun Gun, baton or metal flashlight, and physical abuse at all age levels. The primary mechanisms of injury related to blunt force trauma and firearm ballistics are reviewed in-depth with numerous case studies of victims and suspects. A primary goal of this class is to provide you with the ability to recognize these injuries, and objectively document in a manner that is appropriate for medical charting and for use in a court of law. We will also review forensic methods of collection of potential physical evidence from the body, clothing, or (hospital) sheets that are on or near the body of a (living) victim or suspect in a hospital or community clinic setting. These skills are invaluable for the medical professional working as a Forensic Nurse, and inter-acting with individuals that survived a traumatic criminal incident, are suspected of committing a physical criminal act, or when representing the County Coroner/Medical Examiner as a field investigator conducting a death investigation.
