OVW Announces the Release of the National Pediatric SAFE Protocol

The Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) and IAFN announce the release of A National Protocol for Sexual Abuse Medical Forensic Examinations: Pediatric (Pediatric SAFE Protocol). This Protocol is the culmination of a collaborative process involving child abuse pediatricians, pediatric SANEs, children's hospitals, emergency departments, child advocacy centers, community and systems-based advocacy programs, law enforcement agencies, prosecutors and federal partners. The goal of the Pediatric SAFE Protocol is to provide evidence based, trauma informed recommendations for those who are caring for children who have experienced sexual abuse. It is geared toward those healthcare providers performing the medical forensic evaluation of children, but will be useful for all the disciplines involved in the response to child sexual abuse.

OVW Director, Bea Hanson has prepared a blog post about the new Pediatric SAFE Protocol and the Kidsta project. You can read that blog at this link: https://www.justice.gov/opa/blog/promoting-healing-and-well-being-victims-child-sexual-abuse

In addition to the Pediatric SAFE Protocol, OVW is supporting the KIDSta Project, provided through the IAFN. KIDSta will provide a vehicle for dissemination of the Pediatric SAFE Protocol, as well as education and resources regarding the unique needs of prepubertal children who have been sexually abused. For technical assistance needs, contact Diane Daiber at: information@kidsta.org or 410-626-7805.
