Visiting Your Legislator in Washington, DC

Requesting an Appointment with your U.S. Representative and Senators

Since you are requesting an opportunity to meet with your elected officials in Washington, D.C., you must call their respective Washington, D.C. offices to make an appointment.

  1. Locate your Senators and U.S. Representatives at www.Senate.gov and www.House.gov, or Call the U.S. Capitol Operator at 202-224-3121. 
    Know the name of your House Representative prior to calling; the operators will not be able to look that information up for you.

  2.  Once you have reached the appropriate office, ask to speak to the scheduler. Some schedulers will require you to prepare a letter requesting a visit with your legislator. Here is a sample letter that you can customize.

  3. When speaking to the scheduler:
  • Identify yourself as a constituent and also identify yourself by profession (nurse, forensic nurse).

  • Inform the scheduler the date and time you will be in Washington, DC (Tuesday, April 4, between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m., for example)

  • Express that you understand the Representative or Senator has a busy schedule, but meeting with him/her is very important and you are willing to work with their schedule on that day.

  • If the member of Congress’ schedule does not permit a face-to-face meeting, express to the scheduler that you would be pleased to meet with his Chief of Staff, Legislative Director, and/or the Legislative Assistant handling health care issues.

  • Remember to thank the scheduler. They are a critical source to accessing your legislator.

    4. Be sure to confirm your appointment with the scheduler as the date gets closer.
